Painting Tips- How to get the best finish with your polish.

Naomi Andersson the award winning entrepreneur who began Green Hands in 2005 shares her top tips for getting a salon finish at home.

Suncoat Tips:
Suncoat Polish dries quicker if you apply thin coats.
One coat for a sheer finish, 3 for a bold finish.
Suncoat doesn't require a base coat, the film it creates seals the colour away from the nail, so there is no staining or absorption of the product into the nail.

  • Start with a wide stripe down the centre of the nail, start it just before the cuticle not touching the skin.
  • Take your second swipe round to the side and create a neat finish to one side, repeat on the other side. Ensuring you have enough polish on the brush fill in, always brushing in the same direction from cuticle to tip.

Tips for the best finish:

  • Suncoat can be patchy in first and second coats. By coat 3 or even 4 you will have an even finish so don't panic!
  • Keep hands out of hot water (washing hands is OK!) for 4 hours
  • Water based polish adheres better if your natural nails aren't too greasy, save hand cream for after your nail polish has dried.
  • If your natural nails have ridges it will be more difficult to get a nice finish.
  • Wear gloves for gardening and household chores.
  • Use a clear topcoat and repeat the application after 2 to 3 days to improve the length of wear of your polish.
  • Use Suncoat Polish Remover to remove your polish after a week; sometimes a long soak (10 - 15mins) in warm water is enough to soften the polish and you can peel off. The longer you leave your Suncoat Polish the more difficult it can be to remove. Your usual nail polish remover does not work on Suncoat Polish. As always I recommend you give yourself a break and allow your nails to rest for a few days before re-applying.

Mavala Tips:
For solvent based polishes, I recommend Mavala, my favourite solvent based brand Formaldehyde free and available in a wide range of wonderful colours.

  • Thin coats dry quicker
  • Use their Base 2000 base coat, its a miracle worker adding flexibility to the finish.
  • Alternatively use their Ridge Filler, again a top quality product from a highly respected brand, committed to reducing toxins in nail polish.
  • Keep a gap all around the edge of the nail (cuticle and sides) so the product doesn't stick to your skin.
  • Apply in three wide strokes first to the centre, then one side and then the other. Very carefully take the brush under the free edge of the nail and coat the tip with colour.
  • Repeat for 2 coats
  • Finish with Colourfix Top Coat and again, re-apply this after a few days to extend the wear of your polish.
  • Remove with Suncoat Nail Polish Remover and give your nails a break. Go naked for a few days!
