Why water-based polish so much better?
- Environmentally Friendly:
Conventional nail polish contains large amounts (typically around 70%) of chemical solvents such as toluene, acetates and alcohol. When nail polish is applied to nails, these solvents evaporate to the air, generating toxic chemical fumes. The air becomes polluted and the odour can be offensive. This is why many people find it is hard to breathe when using conventional nail polish: you are surrounded by heavily polluted air. Skin and nails have shown to be absorbent, these chemicals can work their way into your blood stream.
In Suncoat's water-based nail polish, all the chemical solvents are replaced by water. When Suncoat's water-based nail polish is being applied to the nails, it is the water that evaporates to the air, not the toxic chemical fumes.
- Safer to Nails:
The chemical solvents in conventional nail polish, after repeated use, can discolor nails and make nails brittle and weak. This is not an issue with water-based nail polish.
- Not A Safety Hazard:
Since conventional nail polishes contain so many chemical solvents - as much as 70% - they are highly flammable and explosive. They are often classified as dangerous goods. They become safety hazards for retail stores, salons and residential homes alike.
Conventional polishes should be kept away from sources of heat, such as burning candles etc. and other open flame sources.
Water-based nail polishes, on the other hand, are not considered dangerous or hazardous goods - they are much safer in storage and for use indoors.
Other Benefits of Suncoat Water-based Nail Polish:
- No Phthalate of Any Kind
Although now banned in Europe. Many conventional nail polishes hidden away in our bathroom cabinets still contain a highly toxic chemical - phthalate. Phthalate, or more specifically, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), has been proven by research studies, to interfere with normal hormone balance. The absorption of DBP can cause severe birth defects & other health problems. Phthalate is a very effective and popular plasticizer that gives nail polish its flexibility. It can also prevent polish from cracking etc. Phthalate has low chemical volatility (meaning it will not evaporate). Once conventional polish is applied to our nails the phthalate chemical can be absorbed into our bodies.
Suncoat water-based nail polish is phthalate-free.
- Formaldehyde-free:
Many regular nail polishes have formaldehyde-releasing ingredients. Formaldehyde has been reported as a carcinogenic chemical.
Suncoat water-based nail polish is formaldehyde-free.
Caution: Do not allow Suncoat Nail Polish to freeze.
If my nail polish is water based, how come it doesn't come off when I wash my hands?
Like water based emulsions used in paint there is a low % acrylic polymer used to bond the polish. Once dry your polish is actually more resistant to wear than some brands of solvent based nail varnishes. However, we do recommend you try to avoid soaking your hands in hot water for any length of time in the first 12 hours, and we recommend you wear protective gloves for household chores and gardening.
Why do my fingers go cold when I apply my water-based nail polish?
The evaporation that takes place with a water-based nail polish is marginally slower than that with a solvent based varnish; therefore your nail tips may sense a slight coldness as your polish dries.
Why does my nail polish feel rubbery?
You do need to use the clear topcoat to give a good finish to the manicure, this dries to a tough and shiny protective layer that doesn't yellow. Using the polish only can lead to a slightly sticky or rubbery feel (especially after washing up without protective gloves on!) and chipping.
I have come to re-apply my nail polish and I can't get the
last lot off what do I do?
Welcome to the only downside we have found to water based polishes, they can take some time to remove, our tips are:
- Change your polish more than once per week.
- Give yourself a treat and soak your hands in warm water for 10 minutes to soften the polish and give flexibility to your nails.
- Use our GM Free plant based Natural Nail Polish Remover on organic and fair trade cotton wool pads or reusable muslin cloth and allow this to penetrate for a few minutes.
- Gently massage with the cotton wool and rub away the polish. Rather than melt into the cotton wool like a solvent-based varnish, you will notice it flakes away.
- You can also 'tidy up' with an orange stick or cuticle pusher wrapped in your cotton wool or muslin. Do take care not to scratch the surface of the nail, as you will weaken it.
If this seems too time consuming for to do yourself with your hectic lifestyle why not book in with your local Green Hands Nail Technician or approved Salon who will be delighted to assist you with removal, share manicure tips and finish off with a fresh coat in a new colour! |
